Reading the video comments - what seems to have happened is that the shooter was firing into an IRON target, which shattered on impact, and a piece of the iron flew back and hit him.

many are saying that a 180degree ricochete from a 50 Cal. bullet is impossible, as there is so much kinetic energy involved that the bullet itself vaporizes(?)

Whoever said the bullet disintegrated is pretty much wrong, I'd say. Ball ammo tends NOT to be frangible, even in the .50 bmg size range. IIRC, military M2 ammo (Ma Deuce, baby!) travels around 2800 fps, leaving plenty of energy for ricochet events. I also had to laugh at the retards who think that you can be killed by a miss even as far as 6" away. Um, bullets travel around 1000 to 2000 mph, not even mach 3, much less a significant fraction of c. I think they're confused about hydrostatic shock...

I see several plausible scenarios:

Fragment of target
Whole or part of the metal casing of a jacketed slug
"2 point" ricochet (think 2-bank carom shot)
A direct ricochet - highly unlikely for a lot of reasons, but (barely) possible.

Given how fast the object depicted is moving I'd guess casing or target fragment.

Scary shit though. It's a come to jesus moment fo sho!
