This phone is Verizon's answer to the iPhone and is made by Motorola. I've been wanting an iPhone but won't tithe to AT&T to get it.

Has anyone heard anything about the Droid? Pros / Cons?

I've been following the Droid pretty closely, since I'm a Verizon customer who is starting to look at getting a smartphone. I hate using the Blackberrys, and my brother's Windows Mobile phone isn't the friendliest thing to use. This site outlines how to install the Android SDK which includes an emulator, and I've been playing with the emulator to see how I like using it. Android 2.0 is pretty intuitive IMO and it seems like it would be at least as good as the iPhone (coming from someone who hasn't used either phone much at all). People are reporting that it is pretty fast too, something that doesn't come across in an emulator obviously. The spec list is impressive and I like the physical keyboard and huge display. Personally, I'm gonna be standing in line on November 6th to get one, because so far I like what I see a lot.

I got the Droid on Friday and love it. Really my only complaints so far have to do with the app support for Android 2.0 since some existing apps have reduced functionality with it. This will improve with time though. The keyboard isn't perfect but it also isn't as bad as some reviews have made it out to be. Overall I am very happy with my purchase. Posting from it right now from the bathroom at work, in fact Wink

Also, the on-screen keyboard is better than I was expecting. About half the time I don't even bother using the physical keyboard. If you are on the fence about getting one, keep in mind that more models with Android 2.0 are coming out next year.

I'm due for an upgrade with Verizon, I've been thinking seriously about the Droid. Currently I'm on the Samsung SCH-I760 and it was a step DOWN from the phone it replaced (the previous Samsung model) in all but the fact that it had a camera. My buddy just went blackberry from the same phone and he's very happy but I'm much more interested in the droid.

I'm also interested in the Droid. I currently have an older BlackBerry and it does almost everything I want. It lacks a camera, GPS w/ Google support, and MMS capabilities. It's web browsing is also something to be desired.

The Droid supposedly has all of these lacking features but I also struggled with the physical keyboard at the store and I've read that the camera is pretty shitty for a 5 MP. I may have to wait for better hardware before I make the leap from my trusty crackberry.

All cellphone cameras are shitty... It's like a law of nature. Or maybe because they want to sell real cameras... I need to get hands-on with one of these this weekend and make up my mind, the keyboard thing is my main concern, but we'll see..

They're shitty because of the size of the lens. Those itty bitty little lenses don't let alot of light in, thus the picture looks like garbage by comparison to an ACTUAL camera. You might get lucky and find one that rivals the "my first digital camera" from ten years ago.

nope.

they're shitty because of the size of the CCD sensor and the lack of autofocus ability. not because the lens 'doesn't let in a lot of light in'.

I'm keen on getting this phone. Coz i'm a rabid google cocksucker, and i tend to fall for those "Fuck company A, buy company B instead!" anti-Apple advertisement campaigns.

This is looking to be my first "does everything" smart phone - i mainly just want GPS but i may as well opt for FULL-AWESOME while i'm in the market. I'm keen to see what kinda Augmented Reality toys people make for it.

I hope they work out the shit with that multi-touch screen. It's got multi-touch but from what i hear barely any programs use it so far (so most ppl don't even know it's got multitouch at all), that's stupid. It's probably lawyers at fault.

I've had it for a few days now and so far so good. Battery life drains fairly quickly but I suppose that's par for the course with a computer in your pocket. My "multimedia dock" is supposed to arrive today. It's going to replace my alarm clock and serve as a charging station.

A co-worker of mine has a Google Phone and he says the battery life can really be extended if you turn off the broadcasting features such as bluetooth, wifi, etc. If you want to use them you can turn them on but keep them off if you aren't actively using them.

I've heard a lot of people are not used to the multitasking ability, it's not just bluetooth/wifi but also software applications that will happily run in the background sucking up your battery life unless you remember to close shit down.

Well I just picked it up this evening. So far so good. I have figured out how to pull up a web page but not how to close it. This should be fun.

Haha, it doesn't really close. You can only go close windows if you have multiple open. From what I've read w/ Android 2.0, you're okay leaving a few "essential" apps such as the web browser running. It's a part of the Android core services is my guess.

I'm enjoying the phone so far. My only gripe is the keyboard at the moment... I always seem to mess up letters on the vertical virtual kb and the physical one. I'll give it time though and will try the horizontal virtual kb.

I'm interested in this device. What questions should I be asking qwest about it? They partner with verizon... looks like it's $200 bux with a 2 year plan - does that sound fair?

That's about what I paid. You should probably spend some time playing with the keyboard. It's a bit awkward and the only thing I don't like about the phone. Also, if being able to talk and surf the net at the same time is a big deal to you, this isn't the droid you are looking for.

I got the Motorola Cliq instead. 13% off monthly T-Mobile through my chob. I like it, never had a smartphone. Typing on it now... do you want to see a picture of my cock? :)
